Lives, fortunes, and sacred honor – Happy Independence Day!
Hopefully this 4th of July is time well spent with family and friends, in service to others, and celebrating the birth of the United States of America.
240 years ago our forbearers declared independence from the most powerful nation on earth and in so doing ensured for themselves years of sacrifice, deprivation, and toil with no assurance of success. In the last paragraph of our “Declaration of Independence” they “mutually pledge[d] to each other [their] lives, fortunes, and [their] sacred Honor” in support of the Declaration. In short they were laying everything on-the-line in defense of freedom. It was more than rhetoric.
The 56 signatories and their families sacrificed much and fulfilled their pledge to help birth our republic. They gave their money to fund the war effort and were never reimbursed, they lost their property to British aggression, served in the Continental Army or Militia, endured imprisonment, and some gave their lives for freedom’s cause.
Their history is worth reading about. It is worth remembering. Americans of all backgrounds should know and appreciate what happened to the gallant 56.
Enjoy your family celebrations this year, the pomp, the parades and fireworks, the barbecue and beer. Reflect on America’s sacrifice born greatness, and above all remember that liberty is so much more important than security. After all, we are Americans. This Independence Day let us commit ourselves to recapturing the liberties we have lost and protecting it for generations yet unborn.
In the Spirit of 1776 – God bless, America!
